Like any debut album, Alleycat Sensibilities encapsulates a lifetime of experiences. As such, it is an interesting mix of JD’s many influences. Everything is here, From the Acid Jazz Bossa-Nova-like trippiness of (It Ain’t) A Done Deal, to the backwards beat, George Clinton-esque funk of Too Much Time on my hands, featuring blues singer Shakura Sáida. All is presented in the musical art form of JD’s generation, hip-hop. The album starts with Talk, a spoken word a capella piece punctuated with frenzied piano dissonance. Over the course of nine songs JD tackles subjects ranging from slavery (Role Reversal), to obsession (Can’t get her out of my mind).
